At its Android preview ahead of Google I/O, Google announced Gemini Intelligence as the new operating layer across Android — not just a chatbot you open, but something embedded into the phone, browser, car, and laptop simultaneously.
The specific quote from Android chief Sameer Samat: "We're transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system." That's not marketing language — that's a statement about what Android fundamentally is now.
Practically this means Gemini can move across apps, understand what's on your screen, and complete multi-step tasks without you manually switching between them. It's also being built into Android Auto, which is in over 250 million cars.
The timing is deliberate. Apple is expected to show its own AI reboot at WWDC weeks from now. Google is moving first to set the standard for what AI on a phone actually looks like. Alphabet's stock is up 140% in the past year. Wall Street believes in this bet. The question is whether users will feel the difference in daily life.
